First aid course is a life - saver for barman

A barman at a Shropshire hotel discovered that training really does pay after a customer collapsed just five days after he had completed a first aid training course. Andrew Cartwright, 29, from The Bear Hotel, Hodnet, rushed to the aid of a member of the public who suffered from a suspected stroke in the bar. Andrew, who lives in the village, near Market Drayton, checked the man's pulse and breathing then put him into the recovery position before calling an ambulance.
He said "It just came naturally. We had only done the course about five days before so it was all fresh in my mind. The customer was having what appeared to be a stroke". "I wouldn't have had a clue what to do if I hadn't been on the course," he added. "It was really beneficial, but I didn't expect to be putting it into practice so soon".
Andrew said other customers propped the man up on some chairs after he collapsed at lunchtime on March 12th , but he spotted that he was in the wrong position and put his training into practice. He had attended the course held at the hotel on march 7th by Pinnacle Training, with the hotel owner Norman Adams, manager Ray Holwell and two other members of staff.
Norman Adams said: "Andrew Cartwright checked for vital signs, and put the customer in the correct recovery position pending arrival of the paramedics and the ambulance. A simple enough operation in itself if you know how, but a life saver at times. "Some knowledge not only generates confidence amongst our hotel staff and customers but extends into any situation at any time". The customer, who lives in the Hodnet area, has recovered from the incident.
